the end of summer

abby’s first summer has flown by! that’s how i think of everything these days… abby’s first this, abby’s first that. she makes all the seasons, holidays, etc feel new again! it’s on another level. i’m sure you mamas can relate:) since tomorrow is the first day of fall, i wanted to play catch up and finish up our summer.

i made sure to get a picture with abby during every hike we took. we called them nature naps because she would just pass out in the wrap while we walked:)

her hands. oh my gosh it just kills me!

one of my favorite weekends was spent helping a friend with flowers for a wedding. i miss playing with flowers so much and it totally sparked an exciting new adventure i’ve been working hard on… more details coming soon!!

but honestly, how gorgeous are these hydrangeas? from her mother’s garden! i need some tips because it would be a dream to have these beauties in our front yard.

steph and i had also been talking for weeks about going to the drive in movie theater and it was so worth it when we finally made the effort to go! it was comfy and relaxing to be outside, i was able to nurse abigail and she fell asleep for the night. win win. (we saw sully)

a highlight was labor day weekend and getting to see my girls!!!!! pure magic that the stars aligned for a quick trip and introducing my closest friends to abby made me so happy. i am grateful to have these wonderful people in my life. emily’s baby girl and abby are only eleven days apart and it made me teary eyed watching them play with each other and talk and just in general be the cutest babies ever together.

it was followed up with a not so fun moment though when abigail got sick for the first time last week. she had a cold and was running a low fever, poor girl. we were both more than relieved when it passed. this picture breaks my heart! had to happen some time i guess!

feeling better at church. this kid cracks me up! straight chillin.

after such a memorable summer, it’s blowing my mind that there are only three months left of 2016 and i’m determined to make them count!

our kitchen renovation: phase one

a month ago i posted about the beginnings of our kitchen renovation and things have finally settled down enough for me to write an update. we were traveling and then obviously trying to get much of the kitchen in working order because oh my goodness, living without one for 6 weeks? or so was wearing on us. actually, living without the kitchen wasn’t really the worst part. we used plastic plates and silverware and the bbq and steph’s parents brought their RV, which also has a tiny kitchen. it was the MESS on our first floor from everything being displaced.

when we got home from our new jersey trip, steph’s parents were here waiting for us and were so incredible in helping us with the reno. they put the IKEA cabinets together and installed them, which was not as straightforward as we had hoped (nothing ever is in this house) because the walls and floors are not straight or even.

i’m so grateful to have the demo behind us. we don’t use the front entrance (we literally don’t even have a key for the front door) so it is such a relief to walk into a bright, clean space every day when we come home. obviously it’s a huge work in progress – some things are just to help us in the between, like the laminate counters and my favorite little table as an island! –  but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

  • toe kicks for ikea cabinets
  • baseboards
  • order and install ceiling fan
  • order and install hardware (ordered!)
  • clean up the back door + entry way
  • air vent
  • order ikea cabinets for around the fridge
  • touch up paint
  • find a light for over the sink
  • DIY harvest table

PHASE THREE

  • DIY vent hood
  • install vent above stove
  • install open shelving
  • backsplash
  • countertops
  • barn door for laundry room
  • ceiling lights for over the table and entry way
  • wood beams for vaulted ceiling

i am such a list-lover so i really need to re-write these phases and stick it on our (new and hopefully arriving soon!) refrigerator for motivation!

a week at the jersey shore

jersey-shore

it’s true: absence makes the heart grow fonder, for sure. i spent every summer growing up at the jersey shore and then in college, stopped visiting because of so many scheduling conflicts… and having to use my vacation days to visit a certain someone:)

but once i found out i was pregnant last summer (was that really a year ago?!), i knew we had to make this family trip happen for 2016. and it was honestly one of the best vacations i’ve ever had! we always stayed at my grandparents but this time rented a house right on long beach island and every single day was jam packed with seeing family, eating lots of yummy food and lounging on the beach. abigail was a dream and slept to the sound of the breeze on the beach every day:)

jersey-shore

we got there a day early and it made me super happy that abby was able to spend some quality time with both of her great-grandparents on this trip.

and then once the rest of the fam arrived, we crossed the bridge to long beach island, where honestly every other house was photo-worthy. so much cuteness on our street!

we got there a little late that first day but still made it to the beach not once, but twice!

some other highlights…

+ boogie boarding

+ the guys chartering a boat to go fishing

+ eating the crabs my grandma caught (for breakfast!)

+ rides at fantasy island… steph’s FIRST ferris wheel! can’t even believe it.

+ a day in north jersey getting to see most of our wonderful extended family

+ taking abby to the lighthouse, which she slept through

+ snapping some family photos & sam and andrew’s engagement pics

+ abby and whitney meeting for the first time!

so glad we made it to the barnegat lighthouse, even if it was for just a few minutes. not even close to how deserted it looks in the picture… the place was packed with people wanting to climb the lighthouse!

and then, before i knew it, the week was over :( our last day we said goodbye to the beach and headed to north jersey where i grew up to see more family and then drive back to canada late in the afternoon.

seeing/doing everything for the first time through my husband and daughter’s eyes made it even more special and i am so happy that we have all agreed to bring back our annual beach trip for the future.

CAN’T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!
